kellogg's — health audit

the ask

navigate the evolving health landscape

help kellogg's analyze attention and social behaviors in cultural conversation to identify how cereal can re-enter the wellness dialogue with relevance, credibility and modern appeal.

methodology

state of attention + competitive scan

we immersed ourselves in online conversation — tracking how people talk about health, what they trust and where cereal shows up (or doesn't). in parallel we studied how culturally relevant brands earn attention: messaging, tone and tactics across social.

culture

health is a high-stakes guessing game — and cereal isn't invited

  • the food pyramid is dead — feeds are flooded with keto, gluten-free, plant-based, low-fodmap, no seed oils, high-protein, dairy-free, no dyes, sugar detox, ancestral eating
  • food curiosity has become ingredient anxiety — red dye, sugar, seed oils, anything 'ultra-processed' triggers concern
  • even health-conscious consumers are missing fiber, iron and protein because today's food often lacks depth
  • glp-1 has shifted the story from 'willpower' to biology
  • processed foods are now political — shorthand for what some feel is broken in america
  • mistrust of 'big food' is widespread, bipartisan and growing

consumer

three implications for how cereal should speak

  • confusion erodes trust. simplicity builds it. — speak plainly, confidently, consistently (not apologetic)
  • health is personal and emotional — market to journeys, not to 'health' in the abstract
  • one-size-fits-all won't cut through — take a cohort-based approach with tailored language

cohorts

a self-curated journey shaped by life stage

  • gen z & millennials — biohacking to longevity, holistic gut health, invest in future health
  • gen x & boomers — proactive health management, meal prepping, regularity, redefine aging
  • shared thread — people spotlighting their own struggles, breaking the myth that health is one-size-fits-all

the main ingredient narratives

protein, fiber, sugar, ultra-processed

  • protein is a modern badge of health — protein for breakfast, protein = longevity
  • fiber's glow-up is real, but daily goals feel like a hurdle — off-putting taste and complicated rules hold people back
  • sugar is condemned as the villain of modern wellness — 'no space for balance or moderation'
  • 'ultra-processed' has become a powerful symbol of distrust and rebellion against big food

where cereal wins

a spectrum of feel-good moments people want to hold onto

  • joy + satisfaction — 'few things hit as hard as a bowl of cereal'
  • confidence + invigorated — cereal as pre-workout
  • ease + relief — a shelf-stable, low-effort meal any time of day
  • nostalgia + comfort — 'cereal has been there when nothing else was'

three cereal implications

guilt-free · public · brag-worthy

  • guilt-free eating is the new aspiration — chase peace of mind, not perfection
  • if health is public, the ingredient list is the trust test — write like humans, not legal teams
  • make cereal brag-worthy — protein pairing, fiber support, no shame — post-worthy again
